- W3088354313 abstract "The default point of view when examining children and media is that children are influenced and socialized by parents and by mass media. In this view, children are often considered as passive recipients while parents are acknowledged active agency. Concepts such as parental mediation, monitoring, and modeling all indicate the active role that parents play in children's lives. However, theory and empirical research from several fields such as socialization research, developmental psychology, parenting, and parent–child interaction literature indicate that children too, are critical evaluators of parental and mediated messages and that they have the power to influence and socialize parents as well. Although several of these well‐known concepts are inherently bidirectional by nature, this bidirectional socialization perspective is currently lacking in theories and empirical research in media research. This entry provides an introduction to child influences and a bidirectional socialization framework in media research." @default.
