- W3088894737 abstract "Technological, economic, and social advancements have arguably shifted the working American mindset to one valuing flexibility over stability (i.e., self-employment). Despite its increasing prevalence, it is unclear how self-employed workers may differ in how they define and interpret the construct of “job performance,” as well as whether self-employed (SE) and organizationally employed (OE) workers differ in their levels of such performance. Using data from SE (N = 128) and OE (N = 536) workers, we first conducted multigroup invariance tests of four measures of performance: (1) in-role behaviors (IRB); (2) creativity; (3) innovative work behaviors (IWB); and (4) perceived workload. Once invariance was established, we next examined performance levels among OE and SE workers. While there were no significant differences in perceived workload or IRB between the two groups, SE workers reported higher levels of creativity and IWB than OE workers. These results suggest that the use of job performance scales developed traditionally for use in OE populations may be validly used among SE workers. Given the higher levels of creativity and innovation reported among SE workers, future research should evaluate the relative importance of these aspects of performance in predicting the success of SE business ventures compared to OE employees." @default.
