- W3089593311 abstract "“How could I apply this information?” This is a well-designed longitudinal study that tracks sedentary behavior in children who have cerebral palsy (CP), Gross Motor Function Classification System (GMFCS) levels I to III (walking) from 1.5 years old through preadolescence (ages 8-12 years). This study strengthens clinicians' ability to measure and compare sedentary behavior in children who have CP to other similar GMFCS level peers as opposed to using data validated by peers who are developing typically. Physical therapists can use the information to provide activity recommendations for moderate-vigorous physical activity (MVPA) as a way to decrease risk of cardiovascular disease and poor muscle health in adulthood. This study highlights the importance of addressing sedentary behavior at an early age to maximize the health benefits and minimize the secondary complications. “What should I be mindful about when applying this information?” Clinicians should be mindful that simply increasing the duration of MVPA per day might not be the best option. Children who have CP already expend more energy than peers who are developing typically performing the same activities. These authors suggest discouraging sedentary behaviors and interrupting bouts of sedentary activity with light physical activity such as use of standing desks, walking breaks, and generally sitting less during daytime hours. Sitting for long periods is detrimental to the general health of all individuals, including children with CP. Brittany Anderson, PT, DPT University of Jamestown Fargo, North Dakota" @default.
