- W3089764281 abstract "Retraction of an article published in the Journal of Vascular Surgery (JVS) has been extremely rare. During the 37 years of the Journal’s existence, it has occurred only four times, and never before with an article that the current Editors had accepted for publication. The reasons for retraction are listed in the COPE (Committee on Publication Ethics) Retraction Guidelines and include unreliable findings, plagiarism, previous publication of the same or similar article without disclosure, data used without authorization, copyright infringement, unethical research, compromised peer review process, or failure to disclose a major competing interest. The article “Prevalence of unprofessional social media content among young vascular surgeons” was published online on December 25, 2019, and in print in the August 2020 issue of the JVS.1Hardouin S. Cheng T.W. Mitchell E.L. et al.Prevalence of unprofessional social media content among young vascular surgeons.J Vasc Surg. 2020; 72: 667-671Abstract Full Text PDF PubMed Scopus (16) Google Scholar The study generated intense reaction in social media and in the press, with hundreds of comments from members of the Society for Vascular Surgery, the medical community, and the public. A repeat review of the manuscript by our editorial team found the authors had used data for research purposes without proper authorization and that the findings and conclusions were unreliable owing to major flaws in the methodology and the conscious and unconscious bias that was obvious to many, although not to us. Some of the methodology and findings were likely due to honest errors and naive mistakes. We retracted the paper and issued an apology.2Editors’ statement regarding “Prevalence of unprofessional social media content among young vascular surgeons.J Vasc Surg. 2020; 72 (Available at: https://www.facebook.com/TheJVascSurg/photos/a.611986142331744/1381024778761206/. Accessed September 16, 2020): 667-671Abstract Full Text PDF PubMed Scopus (63) Google Scholar The article and the surrounding public debate, however, revealed the conscious and unconscious biases that exist in our academic and editorial systems, where the criteria of professionalism have historically been defined mostly by and for older white men, using criteria that do not always speak for our current workforce or patient population, which is much more diverse. In the era of social media, new norms of professionalism must be both understood and accepted, where both patient's and physician's privacy are respected. To reduce the likelihood of these errors occurring in the future and ensure high ethical standards, the Journal will address conscious and unconscious bias in the peer review and editorial systems, learn about the changing criteria of professionalism, and increase the diversity in our editorial boards and journal leadership. We responded to the call to action for gender diversity on our editorial board and among reviewers3Kibbe M.R. Freischlag J. Call to action to all surgery journal editors for diversity in the editorial and peer review process.JAMA Surg Aug 31. 2020; ([Epub ahead of print])Crossref Scopus (50) Google Scholar and will strive to invite both genders to participate in the peer review of all manuscripts submitted to JVS journals. In addition, we appointed Ulka Sachdev-Ost, MD, from the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center as Associate Editor with a special focus on Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion for the JVS and we expanded our reviewer guide to include more details on ethical research. We are committed to embrace the breadth of talented people who are constantly joining our vascular disease specialty at all levels—as students, trainees, surgeons, and allies. Our goal is to be inclusive of all readers and contributors to our journals. In collaboration with the Society for Vascular Surgery and its newly formed Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Committee, we will significantly increase the number of women and underrepresented minorities as reviewers and members of the editorial board, and we will modify the paper review process. We make these changes to ensure the Journal of Vascular Surgery remains the premier international journal of medical, endovascular, and surgical care for patients with vascular diseases.
