- W3089904310 abstract "Evolution of mankind is often associated with how well he utilizes the various sources of energy around him. High dependency on a particular source, fossil fuels, has led to depletion. Industrial revolution often results in the depletion of natural resources. When it comes to the transportation sector, dependency of hydrocarbon and oil has led to global warming and associated changes in climatic patterns. Constant pursuits to adopt renewable sources have not found traction because of the extensive availability and utilization of fossil fuels. We should not wait to the point where oil ceases to exist before adopting cleaner energy sources like hydrogen. Hydrogen is poised to become the best energy source among other options. Hydrogen possesses one of the highest energy densities among fuels. Although it is associated with every hydrocarbon that can be cleaved, the best method to produce and utilize hydrogen is through electrolysis of water. The process can be made less energy intensive if it can be coupled with solar cells for the dissociation of water into hydrogen and oxygen. Stored hydrogen can be further utilized in a fuel cell, an electrochemical device, where it combines with oxygen/air to produce electricity with water as a by-product. Fuel cells do not possess any moving parts or require the combustion of fuels making this technology attractive. Some limitations entail how hydrogen can be transported and handled in any commercial vehicle. The cost of a fuel cell is dictated predominantly by the ion-exchange membrane, which is like heart of the fuel cell, and the catalyst utilized in the reaction. Significant cost of the cell is also shared by the flow-field plates. Extensive understanding about the hydrogen technology is required to address the challenges to make it commercially viable. This chapter will provide key insights about the issues concerning hydrogen and the steps taken by researchers worldwide to address majority of them." @default.
