- W3090897134 abstract "Abstract The removal efficiency of biological activated carbon (BAC) for the NH4+-N decreased with the service time, some measures must be taken to enhance the NH4+-N removal. Bench and pilot tests were used to study the influence of low frequency ultrasound (US) on the NH4+-N removal effects by BAC. The results showed that low-frequency ultrasound could significantly improve the BAC’s NH4+-N removal efficiency, the removal rate increased from 64.79 % to 85.48 % under proper ultrasound conditions for the BAC with service time of 10 years. The increase of the removal efficiency attributed to the variation of the biomass growth rate, biofilm structure under the action of ultrasound, categories of microorganism, enzyme activity and cell permeability. However, each approach promoted the NH4+-N removal with different proportion and duration time. The biomass growth rates on ultrasound-treated BAC accelerated from 5.07 to 9.76 nmol P/(gC d−1) in the first 2 days, then decreased with time till restored to the untreated level in 21 days later, which contributed to the NH4+-N removal through the microbial assimilation. SEM and Confocal Laser Scanning Microscopy (CLSM) diagram of sample also showed that ultrasound altered the structure of the BAC’s film and favor the transfer of nutrients and dissolved oxygen. The results of 16S rRNA showed that US treatment increased the diversity of microbial population and the proportion of nitrobacteria on BAC. Ammonium monooxygenase (AMO) activity of nitrobacteria on BAC increased from 2.86 × 10-4 to 3.48 × 10-4 μ mol N/h/nmol P after ultrasonication and the increase lasted the whole operation time, the cell permeability of microorganism on BAC improved by ultrasound within the first 48 h. In addition, the enhanced performance of ultrasound was influenced by the power intensity, reaction time and BAC’s service time. In conclusion, US could be used as one enhanced strategy for the BAC to remove NH4+-N." @default.
