- W309163642 abstract "This chapter describes the aerobic respiration of prokaryotes. Facultative and obligate respirers occur among nearly all morphological types of bacteria, Gram positives, and Gram negatives. The citric acid cycle is commonly found, and the concentration of the enzymes of the cycle, such as in E . coli , is far higher in aerobic than in anaerobic conditions. Complex respiratory chains containing quinones, flavoproteins, and cytochromes have also been found in mycoplasmas. The organisms are the smallest bacteria known and without cell walls. They normally live as parasites. In respect to the rickettsiae, obligate parasites, it has been suggested that they meet their endogenous ATP requirements by respiration, but depend on the host for the supply of key metabolites. Several aerobic bacteria limit themselves to partial oxidation of organic substrates. Acetic acid bacteria obtain energy from the oxidation of ethanol, ultimately derived from carbohydrates, to acetic acid. At first, metabolic hydrogen is obtained in the dehydrogenation of the substrate." @default.
