- W3091844991 abstract "Multi-objective optimization (MOO) via normal boundary intersection algorithm for achieving high quality biodiesel suitable for diesel engine operation using a case study of rubber-seed oil transesterification process was studied. A sequence of experiments was carried out at different settings of the process variables prescribed by the experimental design and response surface methodology (RSM). The interactive effects of the system parameters were calculated in terms of yield (Y), kinematic viscosity (KV) and cetane number (CN). The results of the RSM study were further applied in the MOO of both the biodiesel production yield and some key fuel performance parameters including; the KV and the CN. The design problem requires that the process yield is maximized while the KV and CN are either minimized or constrained to their useful standards. Considering the observed trends in the design objectives, a suitable algorithm called normal boundary intersection (NBI) algorithm was applied to solve the multi-objective optimization problem. The optimal results were gathered as a pareto-front plotted between biodiesel production yields and KV while the CN was fixed, at comparable conditions for optimum response. The pareto-front reveals the necessary trade-offs to the design objectives required to achieve both optimum yield and improved fuel properties. The results revealed that with minimal trade-off to the design objectives, some desirable fuel properties such as low viscosity in the range of 0.5–3.5 mm2/s and centane of 47 can be achieved simultaneously with high biodiesel production yields in the range of 90–100%. Transition to the optimum yield (≥91%), kinematic viscosity (1.3 mm2/s) and cetane number (47) were achieved simultaneously with reaction temperature of 40 °C, reaction time of 136 min, methanol ratio of 3 and catalyst concentration of 0.83%. Validation experimental at the optimum responses gave a mean error indices of Y (±4.37), KV (±0.95) and CN (±1.14). MOO can be generalized for other biodiesel production processes." @default.
