- W3091897061 abstract "“Subjective well-being” (SWB) or “life satisfaction” approaches are increasingly used by researchers and policy-makers to complement established methods for the valuation of public goods. This chapter reviews the small but growing body of literature that applies this method to evaluate the impacts of natural hazards. The review suggests that SWB approaches are valuable to capture the significant psychological damage caused by these disasters. Second, they provide a method to evaluate impacts when other sources of information are scarce or difficult to collect, or when the range of possible benefits and costs of a disaster is not known. However, SWB approaches have limitations. They rely on regular survey data, which is costly to collect and not yet available for many locations exposed to natural disasters. New sources of data on well-being and risk perceptions will provide the basis for future research in this area." @default.
