- W3092153005 abstract "Fruit flies are one of the most damaging horticultural pests in North Africa, but to date there is no review gathering information and comparing their pest status across the countries in this region. This review, based on a large number of publications from Tunisia, Algeria, Morocco and Egypt and other research from other parts of the world, attempts to fill this information gap. In these countries, two species are of highest concern for fruit industry: the polyphagous Mediterranean fruit fly (Medfly) Ceratitis capitata (Wied.) and the peach fruit fly (PFF) Bactrocera zonata (Saunders) (in Egypt, Sudan and Libya only). In the Maghreb region (Tunisia, Algeria and Morocco), Medfly is the major pest on citrus and summer fruits whereas in Egypt it has been outcompeted in many locations by the invasive PFF. In temperate regions (such as Tunisia and Morocco) and in warmer regions (such as Egypt), Medfly and PFF are active almost all year-round and complete up to 10 generations/year if host-plants are available. In the near future, both species could enlarge their host range and period of infestation to spring-early summer and even to winter with increasing global temperatures. Under the current climate, PFF could already expand its area of distribution to most parts of Africa but also to more Northern regions (especially Mediterranean countries) projected to be climatically suitable. Adaptability to warming climate and biotic potential of these flies would enable to them to establish and to increase densities in Mediterranean basin with high impacts on fruit production and exportation." @default.
