- W3092300972 abstract "Seismoelectromagnetics has developed remarkably in these years after establishment of the pioneering theoretical scheme by Pride (1994). Significant results are accumulated by the theoretical, numerical, and laboratory approaches. But there are few field accomplishments. Here we introduce interesting small electric events by using the special underground antenna. They may open a new window for the Seismoelectromagnetics. Here we show that a special underground electric field measurement could detect microcracks suggested to be related with the great Tohoku earthquake. The electric disturbances are analyzed from several points to investigate if or not they are related with the earthquake. Three kinds of anomalous events (A, B, C) are identified and classified by frequency and waveforms. The A-type events (ELF band) had been repeatedly detected in the field observation from 1989 to 2011 at the times of crustal activities as seismic swarms and volcanic activities. The B-type (ULF band) had several characteristics to suggesting intimate relations with the nucleation period. Especially, the activity is limited to the imminent stage before the earthquake following the modified Omori's law. C-type event (VLF) has the highest frequency and appeared only after the main shock. Those variations are suggested to be induced by different physical stages of the preparatory process of earthquake occurrence. The generation mechanism is suggested through the electrokinetic effects in the elasticoporous medium on the ground of considerable agreement of observational results with the theoretical estimation based on the formation of Pride." @default.
