- W3093357421 abstract "Energy-related carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions account for more than two-thirds of the world's greenhouse gas emissions. These emissions arise from the use of fossil fuels, which provide 82 per cent of the world's energy needs. Notwithstanding attempts to limit greenhouse gas emissions, the use of fossil fuels continues to increase. The International Energy Agency projects that, by 2035, the share of fossil fuels in the world's energy mix will fall to only 76 per cent and energy-related CO2 emissions will rise by 20 per cent, even after accounting for all known climate change commitments by governments. Most of this increase is due to developing countries, which account for more than 90 per cent of energy demand growth to 2035. A portfolio of low-carbon technologies will be needed to make deep cuts in these emissions. In particular, carbon capture and storage (CCS) can play a large role in achieving these cuts, alongside renewables and energy efficiency. CCS is a proven technology that can greatly reduce CO2 emissions and its deployment is necessary to ensure climate change objectives are achieved at the lowest possible cost. CCS technology has been utilised in many industrial situations for decades, and is now also operating at large-scale in the power sector. The experience gained from building first generation plants such as Boundary Dam will lead to significant cost reductions in subsequent projects. Successful demonstration of large-scale integrated CCS projects in additional industry sectors will build public confidence by showing the technology in action and help drive innovation to bring down costs. The major impediment to CCS progress is not technical, rather, it is insufficient policy support exacerbated by poor public understanding. Sustained policy support, increased public awareness, correct financial incentives and continued research and development are needed to ensure successful implementation of large-scale CCS projects." @default.
