- W3093928617 abstract "Discussions of semantic theory by Machery and colleagues cast doubt on the universality of the intuitions that drive the approach to semantics inspired by Kripke, and suggest the partial adequacy of a descriptivist stance. In the past I have argued against the significance of those results, but some philosophers have considered them substantial enough to argue that we should abandon the hope for a universal semantic theory and be prepared to become semantic pluralists. Recent experimental work by Domaneschi, Vignolo and Di Paola, and by Devitt and Porot, contradicts the experimentalists’ descriptivist conclusions, but their results by themselves may not suffice to convince the revisionists arguing for some form of pluralism. The aim of this paper is threefold: to review and clarify the reasons for my original diagnosis of Machery and colleagues’ work, to discuss the impact of the new anti-descriptivist findings, and to provide reasons to resist the pull of revisionism." @default.
