• W3094485524 abstract "INTRODUCTION: Diverticulosis is the presence of small pouches outwardly bulging in weak spots of the colon wall with diverticulitis being the inflammation of those small pouches. Their prevalence is known to substantially increase with age. However, the current knowledge on public interest and the seasonality of diverticulosis and diverticulitis is limited. Therefore, the aim was to evaluate the infodemiology of both diseases. METHODS: Google Trends was searched between January 2004 and December 2019 for both diverticulosis and diverticulitis in the USA and worldwide to gain information on public interest. Data from English-speaking Northern and Southern Hemisphere countries were also examined to assess trends in seasonality by a cosinor analysis. RESULTS: Diverticulitis had around a 3.8-fold more relative search volume (RSV) than diverticulosis in the USA and Worldwide with both conditions having an overall increasing trend in search volume. The most popular related queries of diverticulosis and diverticulitis were regarding diet (foods), symptoms, definition, treatment, causes and surgery (unique to diverticulitis). The country with the highest RSV for diverticulosis and diverticulitis was the USA. Within the USA, the state with the highest RSV for both diseases was West Virginia. The cosinor analysis revealed a statistically significant seasonal variation in RSV of diverticulosis (Amplitude {A} = 4.4, P < 0.001) and diverticulitis ({A} = 4.2, P < 0.001) in the USA. However, no seasonal variation was found in other English speaking northern and southern hemisphere countries. A seasonal pattern reversed by 6 months was also not seen in english speaking northern vs southern hemisphere countries.Figure 1CONCLUSION: Public interest in seeking information on diverticulosis and diverticulitis in the USA and worldwide has increased in recent years without displaying a seasonal pattern.Table 1" @default.
