- W3094588045 abstract "Abstract Environmental and soil pollution has much increased, and different types of environmental or soil organic pollutants are now prevalent in different parts of the world. Organic pollutants generally originate from production, uses, and disposal of various chemicals of organic origin. These pollutants are of organic nature and can persist in the environment for significantly longer period of time. Organic pollutants generally reach to environment through industrial effluents, drainage system, agricultural runoff, landfill leachate, atmospheric deposition, and urban runoff. Plants generally absorb organic pollutants either from air or soil and exert different negative effects on physiological and biochemical processes of plants. These can lead to significant reduction of photosynthesis-associated pigments by directly interfering with the said pigments and/or by their synthesis inhibition. Reactive nitrogen species (RNS) are nonradical, and free radical molecules are generally produced under different stressful conditions. Different RNSs are derived from nitric oxide (NO), which is considered an imperative signaling molecule. Among the different RNS, NO is the major investigated molecule. RNS play critical role as signaling molecules. Besides their major role in signaling, effects of RNS in alleviation of salt, heavy metal, drought, heat, and cold stress have also been reported. RNS alleviates negative effects of different organic pollutants and helps in sustainable growth of plants. However, their probable role in alleviation of organic pollutants induced damages to plants is relatively limited. So, this chapter covers possible role of RNS in amelioration of organic pollutants that induced negative effects on plants in possible direct and/or indirect way." @default.
