- W3094635144 abstract "Manual diaphragmatic stretching technique (MDST) can be directly applied to stretch diaphragmatic muscle and has been reported to improve the function of the diaphragm in healthy participants and patients with COPD. However, there have been no studies among cerebral palsy (CP). The aim of this study was to examine the effect of MDST on diaphragmatic mobility (DM) and abdominal expansion in children with CP. Ten spastic CP were recruited and received MDST 10 times per set for 3 sets with 10 minutes rest between them. M-Mode Ultrasound (GE Healthcare LOGIQ V2, USA) was applied to assess DM after each set of MDST with the following instrument settings; Convex probe 4.0 MHz, depth 18 centimetres, speed 14 seconds per screen. Abdominal expansion was measured at the umbilical area using a tape measure before MDST and after the third set of MDST. The dependent t-test was applied to test the change after the interventions. The results showed that right DM was significantly increased after MDST at all three sets (p=0.03, p=0.01 and p=0.008) when compared with pre-intervention. Abdominal expansion was also significantly higher after the interventions (p=0.04). These initial results indicate that MDST could immediately improve diaphragmatic mobility and abdominal expansion among CP, though a larger sample is needed to confirm it." @default.
