- W3094968167 abstract "Background: Shortness of breath is reportedly the primary reason for seeking medical care by patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). We developed a vocal biomarker for remote detection of shortness of breath in COPD patients. Aims: To evaluate the capability of vocal biomarkers to detect shortness of breath (SB). Methods: The vocal biomarker algorithm was trained on 14,275 voice recordings of 75 COPD participants in the VOICE study and validated on 158 voice recordings of 25 other participants. The validation voice recordings were organized as 79 pairs, each including 2 distinct voice recordings from the same individual. The voice recordings were collected using smartphones and [Vocalis Health] mobile app. For all the paired recordings in the validation dataset, three experienced board-certified internal medicine physicians determined whether the level of SB was improved, unchanged, or worse in the second voice recording, as compared to the first. The result was determined by the majority. The algorithm analyzed the same pairs of voice recordings and the outcomes were compared to the physicians9 assessments (PAs). Results: The results demonstrated high accuracy of the algorithm outcomes, with 93.51% concordance between the vocal biomarker algorithm and PAs. The sensitivity and specificity for identifying change in the level of SB compared to PAs were 95.45% (95% CI: [77.16%, 99.88%]) and 92.73% (95% CI: [82.41%, 97.98%]), respectively. Conclusions: Remote detection of shortness of breath based on voice analysis using a software-only vocal biomarker solution [Vocalis Health] is feasible and accurate and could provide supportive information in conjunction to patient-reported outcomes." @default.
