- W3096314415 abstract "Epithelial tumors account for a large majority of all ovarian neoplasms, both benign and malignant. Benign ovarian epithelial tumors can have a fibromatous stromal component, in addition to benign epithelium of Mullerian type, and are subclassified based on the Mullerian cell lineage of the epithelium (serous, mucinous, endometrioid, clear cell, Brenner or mixed). Borderline tumors are unique to the ovary, and are also classified based on the Mullerian cell type of the epithelium. Serous borderline tumors are noteworthy for often presenting with advanced stage disease, despite being non-invasive. Even when advanced stage they are associated with a favorable prognosis. Ovarian epithelial carcinomas account for an overwhelming majority of the mortality related to ovarian cancer. High-grade serous carcinomas are the most common, and also the most deadly form of ovarian carcinoma. Other ovarian carcinoma histotypes, in descending order of frequency, are endometrioid, clear cell, mucinous, and low-grade serous, and together these account for 99% of ovarian carcinomas. These five histotypes are characterized by different risk factors, genetic events during oncogenesis, precursor lesions, patterns of spread, and responses to therapy. They only rarely occur as mixed forms. Accurate diagnosis of these ovarian carcinoma histotypes has become critical, with the introduction of histiotype specific treatment." @default.
