- W3096720074 abstract "This chapter provides an overview of the isotope ratio mass spectrometry (IRMS) technique, including theory of operation; applications in forensic science; considerations for operational implementation; intelligence value and court readiness; case studies; and future developments. The breakthrough in classical IRMS was the introduction of the dual inlet mass spectrometer. The key difference between an IRMS instrument and a standard mass spectrometer is the presence of multiple detectors used to simultaneously collect, rather than scan, the mass weights of interest. Two types of measurements can be undertaken using IRMS: bulk measurements and compound specific measurements. Each requires a different sample preparation instrument and interface to the IRMS. Ideally, a forensic laboratory may establish two types of databases to maintain materials encountered in forensic science: material database and case database. The chapter summarizes the key areas where IRMS has the potential to provide greatest effect in forensic science." @default.
