• W3096767072 abstract "Carrageenan can be used effectively as a hydrogel as it is non-toxic in nature. It is more biodegradable and biocompatible than other chemically synthesized gelling polysaccharides and is being used as a means of prolonged drug release. Carrageenan is quite adhesive and has a positive surface charge, making it useful to study the release kinetics of drugs in the mucosal/epithelial tissues. Studies have shown that this polysaccharide has numerous health benefits including good anti-inflammatory and anti-oxidant activity. Curcumin has a high medicinal value serving vast therapeutic purposes, but its hydrophobicity leads to lower rate of systemic absorption, reducing its bioavailability. This can be increased by conjugating curcumin in a polymeric micelle hence improving its therapeutic effect. Pluronic F68 is a group of non-ionic triblock copolymers with two chains of hydrophilic poly(ethylene oxide) flanking a hydrophobic chain of poly (propylene oxide) in the centre. It creates a helical structure in its polymer form, hence encapsulating curcumin within this structure. Our current study involves the encapsulation of curcumin into Pluronic F68 and characterization using FTIR, PSA, Zeta potential, EDAX and TEM. A wound dressing material was prepared by incorporating the encapsulated curcumin on to a hydrogel film based on Carrageenan. In vitro release kinetics of the prepared formulation exhibited a constant and sustained release. In vitro free radical scavenging studies indicated the potential ability of Pluronic F68/Curcumin loaded Carrageenan hydrogel to be effective in wound dressing applications." @default.
