- W309731911 abstract "This chapter discusses the existence of peptide containing neurons in striatal pathways, based mainly on the recent experimental data on Leu-enkephalin and substance ρ immunoreactive material. These two peptides are the most conspicuous in the striatal system. The observations are largely restricted to the rat brain, except for Leu-enkephalin that has also been detected in nerve fibres of the globus pallidus in man. The combination of immunocytochemical methods with knife lesions or microinjections of neurotoxic substances has been a great aid in establishing the site of origin and termination of these peptide-containing neurons. The richness of enkephalin immunoreactive fibres in the globus pallidus is greater than any other area of the brain. This corresponds well with the biochemical data of microdissected brain regions. In the rat, as in man, the globus pallidus is supplied ventrally by perforating vessels. Gamma-aminobutyric acid containing axons are classically regarded as the main component of the negative loop of the strionigral connections." @default.
