- W309777588 abstract "Literary critics have recently been giving increased attention to ethics of reading. Some attempt to determine when readers are called upon to make moral judgments concerning characters and events, and when they should refrain from making such judgments and accept ambiguity and open ness. Others ask how a text's depiction of character reflects assumptions about the individual self and moral agency. In this essay I will outline the most provocative views of these critics and discuss their importance for study of the Hebrew Bible. I will pay particular attention to judicial narratives in the Bible which tend to bring these issues to the fore. My major example is 2 Sam 16 and 19, which reports David's handling of the dispute between Mephibosheth and Ziba. As an expression of fidelity (ion) for the sake of Jonathan, David had given Jonathan's lame son Mephi bosheth a permanent seat at his table and restored his grandfather Saul's estate to him under the supervision of Mephibosheth's servant Ziba (2 Sam 9; cf. 1 Sam 20:14-17, 41-42). When David and his men later flee Jerusalem during Absalom's rebellion, David is intercepted by Ziba, who brings an abundance of food and drink for the men. When David asks Where is your master's son?, Ziba replies, Behold, he remains in Jerusalem, for he said, 'Today the of Israel will restore to me the kingdom of my father.' David then declares that all that belongs to Mephibosheth is now Ziba's (2 Sam 16:1-4). However, when David returns to Jerusalem after Absalom's death, he is met by Mephibosheth, who has refrained from grooming himself since the day of the king's departure. Mephibosheth charges that his servant has deceived and slandered him. Because he is lame, he had planned to saddle an ass to ride on to go with the king. David makes it clear that he has heard enough and then declares, Thou and Ziba divide the land, to which Mephi bosheth responds, Oh, let him take it all, since my lord the king has come in peace to his own house (2 Sam 19:25-31). A survey of scholarly interpretations will show that there is unusually wide disagreement concerning the basic characters of Mephibosheth and" @default.
