• W3098558571 abstract "A review will be given of the effects of the crystal surface on transport in semiconductors, semimetals, and metals, emphasizing the degree to which the basic phenomena are understood. These effects have usually been treated semiclassically, using the Boltzmann transport equation together with a Fuchs boundary condition to represent the degree of specularity or diffuseness of the surface. In this model the idealized surface is specular, although capable of altering the efficiency of the bulk scattering mechanism near the surface if the band structure is not simple. Diffuseness can be produced by surface coupling of the electrons with bulk and Rayleigh phonons. A simple treatment of this will be given. A basic question is whether the simple transport model can be reconciled with the apparent diffuseness of metals and semiconductors and the apparent specularity of semimetals. In nondegenerate semiconductors, the energy dependence of the bulk relaxation time is important for the surface mobility and even more so for the surface magnetoresistivity. Recent results for acoustic phonon and charged impurity bulk scattering will be discussed. Quantum considerations of various kinds may be important. The simplest of these is the spatial quantization of conduction band states which broadens a strong accumulation layer and so weakens the dependence of the surface mobility on surface potential excess." @default.
