- W3099526589 abstract "The ability for cut tissues to join together and form a chimeric organism is a remarkable and agriculturally important property of many plants, however, it is poorly characterized at the molecular level. To better understand grafting we monitored temporal and spatial changes in gene expression in grafted tissues. Tissues above and below the graft rapidly developed asymmetry such that many genes were more highly expressed on one side than the other. This asymmetry correlated with sugar responsive genes and we observed an accumulation of starch above the graft that, after three days, decreased along with asymmetry once vascular connections were re-established. Despite an initial starvation response below the graft, many genes associated with cell division and vascular formation were rapidly activated in grafted tissues but not in cut and separated tissues indicating a recognition mechanism that was independent of functional vascular connections. Auxin response in grafted plants differed from that in cut and separated plants as response was enhanced and symmetric, suggesting that auxin was perceived by the root within hours of reattachment to activated vascular regeneration. Such a recognition process could have broader relevance for wound healing, inter-tissue communication and tissue fusion events." @default.
