- W3099964952 abstract "Abstract Cadmium and lead are toxics that pose a threat to human, animal, and plant health. Selenium is an essential trace element that exerts protective action against cadmium and lead toxicity. Cadmium and lead indirectly enhance oxidative stress, while simultaneously acting through other toxicodynamic mechanisms. Selenium forms complexes with both cadmium and lead, thus preventing their accumulation in tissues. It has been shown that selenium coadministration decreases cadmium and lead levels in all tissues, decreases ALT and/or AST activities, and alleviates histological damage induced by either of the two metals. Selenium coadministration also determines an increase in GPx activity and GSH levels and a decrease in MDA (TBARS) levels. It is likely that selenium also exerts protective effects against cadmium and lead in humans, but the extrapolation is difficult to conduct." @default.
