- W3100050746 abstract "This book chapter reviews the current state-of-the-art in defrosting various types of structured surfaces. The primary bottleneck to drying a frosted surface is the evaporation of the meltwater, which requires significantly more thermal energy compared to melting the ice in the first place. Therefore, many recent studies have developed various types of structured surfaces capable of dynamically removing at least some of the meltwater, in order to bypass the need for evaporation. We suggest two primary benchmarks for characterizing dynamic defrosting: the melting efficiency, which quantifies the extent of melting required for slush to behave in a liquid-like fashion, and the drainage efficiency, which is the percentage of the liquid-like slush that is capable of dynamic removal from the surface. These benchmarks are characterized for a variety of structures that promote dynamic defrosting: finned heat exchangers, micro-grooved plates, liquid-impregnated surfaces, and superhydrophobic surfaces. Mechanisms for dynamic removal include gravitational sliding, gravity-assisted peel-off, and self-propelled jumping powered by surface tension. Finally, we suggest future research directions for further enhancing the effectiveness of dynamic defrosting on structured surfaces." @default.
