- W3100554199 abstract "Surface electromagnetic waves are widely used in modern plasmonics to transmit and process microwave and terahertz-frequency signals via transmission lines and electronic components having only one conducting surface. In the case when the dimensions of such a surface are finite, the excitation of spatially localized oscillations is possible, and the conducting surface itself works as a surface electromagnetic wave resonator (SEWR). Microwave properties of such a SEWR are well studied for the case when its dimensions coincide with the dimensions of dielectric substrates attached to the conducting surface. In contrast to that in this paper we study the microwave properties of a SEWR consisting of a metal film situated on a single oversized dielectric substrate having larger dimensions than the film. We show that in such a system untypical nonresonant dependences of the SEWR oscillations’ frequencies on the resonator dimensions are observed. They can be explained by the transformation between two modes: the surface mode existing above the metal film surface and the other mode localized in/near the dielectric substrate. We believe the observed effect can be used for the development of SEWR-based devices suitable for the applications in modern plasmonics and microwave technology." @default.
