- W3100592350 abstract "Bacteria often exist in a complex and heterogeneous environment. Our understanding of bacterial quorum sensing (QS) systems has evolved from a concept of planktonic species to multicellularity. Technological progress has led to unparalleled scientific advancements in the field of QS in bacteria using homogenous systems. However, challenges towards understanding QS phenomena in either a complex (multiple species sharing the same space) or simple (few cells confined to a limited volume) environment exists. These challenges led to the development of expertise which addresses heterogeneity in the system. Beginning in 2008, cell confinement technologies (microfluidic, microdroplet, hydrogels, lipid silica crystals etc.) initiated the study of QS at the single cell level. These confinement technologies are a potential tool to further our understanding of the heterogeneity aspects of a QS system. In this chapter, we have attempted to describe technology methods for understanding QS systems and hope that this review will encourage the mainstream QS community to explore the heterogeneous system." @default.
