- W310061021 abstract "Publisher Summary This chapter describes the different aspects of the Korean hemorrhagic fever (KHF) and Hantavirus pulmonary syndrome (HPS). Two important examples of emerging viral diseases are presented by KHF and HPS, first identified in 1951 and 1993, respectively. Hantaan virus (HTN) is the cause of KHF and Sin Nombre virus (SN) is the most common cause of HPS. Although viruses causing these diseases occur in totally different parts of the world, they have many features in common. Both cause enzootic infections of rodents in which a single rodent species undergoes lifelong persistent infection, with the shedding of the agent in the urine. The viruses of the genus, Hantavirus, of the family Bunyaviridae provide a paradigm for one class of emerging viral diseases. Each virus has adapted to a single or a small group of rodent hosts with which it has a commensal relationship, being transmitted from adults to young animals and causing lifelong persistent infections with little or no acute disease consequence, although there may be late pathological abnormalities perhaps associated with immune complex deposition. Hantaviruses cause relatively benign persistent infections in their natural hosts, but lead to acute infections with severe disease in humans." @default.
