- W3100873822 abstract "Microbial electrosynthesis (MES) can convert CO2 into value-added multi-carbon organic chemicals like acetic acid by application of electroactive microbes residing on the cathode and under external supply of electrons as reducing equivalents. However, separation of a single organic compound from catholyte is one of the major challenges of this technology. In this regard, a triple chamber circular MES (CMES) cell was designed and operated for successful production and separation of acetic acid. Measurable yield of acetic acid in the cathodic chamber of CMES was found to be 81.35 ± 1.15 g/m2.day at a maximum current density of 12.44 ± 0.08 A/m2, with biogas as the source of CO2 and imposed potential of −1.3 V vs. standard hydrogen electrode. Whereas, the acetic acid yield for extraction chamber was found to be 104.26 ± 1.75 g/m2.day; thus, CMES demonstrated successful separation of acetic acid from the catholyte. Furthermore, coulombic efficiency and carbon recovery efficiency were found to be 60.60 ± 7.62% and 3.08 ± 0.35%, respectively, for the cathodic chamber of CMES. Thus, the investigation demonstrated the efficacious application of a modular setup for the concomitant production and separation of acetic acid produced in the cathodic chamber through MES." @default.
