The Arctic® apple was developed using a sense-posttranscriptional silencing approach using a chimeric PPO gene targeted to disrupt the expression of polyphenol oxidase enzyme and prevent unsightly browning in fruit flesh. Almost 45% of the food is wasted postharvest, and silencing the PPO gene can counter that wastage. The transgenic apple was evaluated agronomically over multiple years and at multiple sites. The Arctic® apple was found to be no different than its parental cultivar. Given the convenience and reduction in food wastage, it is expected that the new product will be welcomed by the consumers and the apple industry. This may pave the way for stacking of additional consumer and agronomic traits in major cultivated varieties, thereby enhancing their economic value." @default.
