It analyses the respective endeavours of Khalsa College, Amritsar, and sets the institution’s early efforts in the context of a persistent rural paternalism among the administrative cadre of Punjab province. It shows how the ‘uplift’ of the rural became an object of the college’s educational and practical efforts when ‘rural reconstruction’ was a nationally and globally debated issue.
