- W3108955829 abstract "This chapter reflects on the struggles of New Zealand’s built environment to be environmentally sustainable, resilient and demographically functional. It is ill-adapted to meet three significant trends: structural ageing, the tenure revolution and declining affordability. All these are feeding the break-down in intergenerational solidarity. The paper argues that transforming our homes and cities from vicious to virtuous cycles is not simply a matter of ‘hard’ design - that is changing the built environment’s fabric - but also around ‘soft’ design, that is, changing the way in which we think about our homes and cities, enabling ordinary people to access and manage homes and city amenities more effectively, changing policy and planning to prioritize age-friendliness, and learning to deal with two of the great economic and social addictions driving dysfunctional built environments in New Zealand - ‘king car’ and the addiction to rising land and house prices." @default.
