- W310960051 abstract "Abstract This chapter provides an overview of the most common thermochemical surface treatments applied to steels (carburising, nitriding, carbonitriding, and boriding), including discussion of the available equipment. Short descriptions of the different hardening mechanisms induced by thermochemical surface treatments are followed by summaries of general design criteria for different types of industrial furnaces, including control systems, gas supply systems, and quenching systems. This is followed by a description of a variety of process types, such as gaseous, plasma assisted, fluidised bed and liquid (salt bath) processes, as well as implantation and laser assisted processes. In each section, covering a specific process type, the typical processes applied and their variants are summarised with examples of equipment and media typically used, the parameters that need to be controlled and the measuring devices that are available to determine such parameters.
