- W3110945987 abstract "In the process of learning and teaching an L2, oral feedback forms part of one of the most common types of classroom interaction, namely the ‘Initiation-Response-Feedback’ (‘IRF’) pattern. Moreover, as a type of interaction, feedback has been an ongoing focus of numerous research in second language teaching which seek to answer the question of whether feedback actually facilitates second language learning. The aim of this thesis was to investigate Croatian students’ preferences toward oral error correction and possible differences between preferences among learners with different proficiency levels. The instrument used in this research was a three-part questionnaire, including six open-ended questions. The sample consisted of 121 participants, including elementary school learners high school learners, and university learners in Zadar. The results generally showed a moderately high preference toward teacher feedback, while preference for peer feedback was moderately low. Moreover, the results indicated higher levels of preference for delayed feedback, while preference for immediate feedback was significantly lower. With regard to preference for different error correction methods, Croatian students showed preference for explicit feedback, elicitation, and metalinguistic feedback, while the preference for no corrective feedback was significantly lower. Differences between proficiency levels were found between elementary school learners, high school students, and elementary school students and university students with elementary school learners showing a stronger preference for teacher feedback, no corrective feedback and recasts compared to the other two groups. On the other hand, university students showed a stronger preference for delayed feedback compared to elementary school leaners. Finally, L2 English learners’ responses to the open-ended questions revealed that they generally wanted to be corrected, but after they have finished speaking; moreover, they wanted to be explicitly told what the mistake is, receive an explanation for it, as well as receive correction for every error they make." @default.
