- W3112858297 abstract "Abstract Robots have assumed increasingly complex duties since their initial conceptualization such as complex fabrication, navigation, and social tasks. Such an escalation of responsibility makes the assignment of robots to armed peacekeeping duties a possibility. However, allowing robots to keep the peace would require considerable human trust for success. A major difficulty in assessing the trust needed to form cooperative relationships between humans and robots is that self-reported trust of robots has been shown to vary across countries. This chapter presents findings from three experiments during which native and expatriate participants from China, Israel, Japan, and the United States indicated their trust of robotic peacekeepers that interrupted a virtual shopping task. We manipulated independent variables that included robot dialog structure (Experiment 1), the task orders driving robot behavior (Experiment 2), and the appearance and weapons wielded by the simulated robot (Experiment 3). Our results showed that dispositional (trait based) trust, obedience to robot demands, and self-reported (state based) trust of robots varied by culture. These findings extend prior investigations by measuring robot trust in the context of social obedience. Furthermore, they provide robot designers with valuable information about human perceptions of robot dialog, appearance, and behavior." @default.
