- W3115404768 abstract "In a series of Imagist and Vorticist essays, Ezra Pound described metaphors, images, and poems as equations; mathematical equality, for Pound, promised both to model mimetic representation and, at the same time, to explain how the most abstract art could designate meaning. The breadth of Pound’s vision of equation was characteristic of his era, when mathematicians reconceived equality as a capacious relation reaching well beyond arithmetic. This chapter surveys the modernist understanding of equality and argues that the mathematical properties of equality characterize Pound’s early usage of metaphor, comparison, and juxtaposition. A mathematical lens reveals how Pound’s use of repetition and tautology attends to commonality, similitude, and sameness as elemental relations upholding poetry. The mathematical properties of equality can define sameness, and as such these properties offer a powerful language toward understanding representation." @default.
