- W3115803772 abstract "In this chapter, the author explores Michael Moore’s envisioning and utilization of Canada as a nation and as a political cultural realm. He traces how Moore’s own patriotic and American left-nationalist discourse dovetails with his promotion and celebration of Canada as a useful alternative to mainstream US politics. The author argues that Moore’s seeming promotion and celebration of Canada does not represent an internationalist perspective, but rather is an expression of his own American left-nationalism—a nation-building project of economic and social justice within a nation–state framework. Moore’s film Roger & Me, with its poignant images of economic collapse, unemployment, and corporate indifference, nonetheless plays on the fear of foreign competition and the willingness of corporate executives to move production to countries such as Mexico. Moore’s interventions to Canadian audiences are often framed as warnings about becoming too American, losing the distinctive Canadian cultural and political sensibility so generative of supposed national difference." @default.
