- W3117001712 abstract "Systemic sclerosis is a severe disease with skin and internal organ fibrosis. A progressive course, complications, functional limitations, multiple visits to the clinic, hospitalizations, an uncertain prognosis and disfigurements often lead to mood disorders, such as depression and anxiety. Mood disorders are common among scleroderma patients but, in many cases, are under-recognized because of the severe scleroderma course. Among other mood disorders, depression is the more common one; it may be moderate or severe in a significant proportion of patients and is associated with a severe negative impact on the patient’s quality of life, survival and mortality. Recognition of a mood disorder is crucial; discordance in a high prevalence of mood disorders and treatment may have a bad influence on patient’s compliance and coping with scleroderma. The education of patients and their family members is of great importance. The care of scleroderma patients, along with physical assessment, medicine prescription and physical rehabilitation, should include psychological assessment and support. Such an approach will provide patients with a better understanding of their condition and improve their coping with scleroderma." @default.
