- W3117081615 abstract "Climate-driven changes in the water cycle, patterns of atmospheric pressure gradients, tidal dynamics, and density distributions are likely to alter circulations in both Chesapeake Bay (CB) and the northern Adriatic Sea (NAS). Changes in the water cycle will, in turn, alter riverine inputs of freshwater, buoyancy and nutrients, alterations that will perturb ecosystem dynamics via eutrophication and associated impacts on the capacity of these ecosystems to support services valued by society. Although lengths, breadths, and depths of the NAS and CB differ, they have well-defined seiche periods, and, while the occurrence of these natural oscillations has been known for some time, they are now understood to be key players in the response to wind stress, now recognized as the dominant mixing mechanism in large estuaries and semienclosed seas with modest tides such as CB and the NAS. Thus, climate-driven, interannual increases in the intensity of siroccos (NAS) and tropical storms (CB), along with sea-level rise, portend of profound ecological changes in both the NAS and CB. In addition, sea-level rise has increased attention on storm surges generated by these wind events. Faster long-wave propagation speeds associated with sea-level rise are predicted to alter both tidal and seiche behaviors, especially in the shallower CB. These dynamics are crucial, not only for establishing the initial phase conditions for short-term surge forecasts, but also for producing inundation projections under climate change. Improving predictions of wind-driven circulation and storm surges remains an important challenge, and the challenges of modeling the effects of physical processes on the biogeochemistry of systems such as the NAS and CB remain daunting. As with the case for modeling the ocean and the atmosphere, turbulent mixing parameterization remains at the crux of the problem." @default.
