The rapid development of information and communication technologies and their application for educational purposes have provoked a heated debate about their place and role in the modern educational process. The term mobile learning means the learning process which uses interactive electronic means of information delivery, electronic media, corporate Internet networks, etc.There are countless programs that help to learn a new language, which makes choosing the right strategy very difficult. It seems reasonable for a teacher to have a toolkit of resources to motivate students by switching programs and using a variety of applications to develop different language skills. Goal. The goal of the present paper is to study the specific features and capabilities of a number of mobile applications for learning foreign languages, to determine their role in the educational process, to outline their main advantages and disadvantages. Methodology. The purpose of the present research and specifics of the object under study determined using synchronous-descriptive method with elements of comparative analysis as well as simulation method which contributed to the comprehensive study of the problem. Results. The peculiarity of acquiring knowledge of a foreign language in higher educational institutions is the leading role of independent work of students. Students use their mobile phones and other devices on a daily basis, and this is a major driver of mobile learning development around the world. A number of language learning programs and mobile applications have been analysed, among the most interesting and efficient ones are HelloTalk, Mondly, Lingua Leo, Quizlet, Memrise, Duolingo, etc. Originality. It is shown how introduction of mobile applications in the process of teaching a foreign language can significantly facilitate the development of students’ foreign language competence. Practical value. In the process of teaching a foreign language to students in the classroom, at home or in individual assignments, mobile applications created specifically for this purpose are extremely useful. However, the teacher must guide his students, give them clear recommendations on the selection of mobile applications, help them use modern information technologies wisely and effectively, and offer quality programs that best suit the needs of students and facilitate the acquisition of foreign language skills." @default.
