- W3119126610 abstract "AbstractTwelve mono-unsaturated fatty acids with deuterium labels were synthesised with chain lengthsranging from C14 to C20, having different double bond positions (5, 6, 7, 9 and 11). These fatty acidswere fed to ants of the species Myrmica sabuleti. The hydrocarbon profiles of the ants were analysedby gas chromatography coupled to mass spectrometry (GC-MS) to study the incorporation of thesefatty acids in cuticular hydrocarbons. When octadec-11-enoic acid (cis-vaccenic acid) is fed, thehydrocarbon profile of the ant includes alkenes derived from the fatty acid, which are not usuallyobserved in the hydrocarbon profile of this species. These alkenes include Z7-tricosene, Z7-pentacosene and Z7-heptacosene. The double bond position counting from the aliphatic chain (ω-position) of the fatty acid thus remains unchanged when the chain is elongated. When the experimentwas repeated with a new set of ants, less significant incorporation effects were observed. Likewise, feeding of the other fatty acids gave only subtle changes in the hydrocarbon profile. Although subtle, there seems to be trend in increased incorporation of the ω-9 and ω-11 fatty acids, which correspondto alkenes found in normally in the hydrocarbon profile. Also, there seems to be a subtle increase inthe uptake in ω-7 fatty, which results in the formation of alkenes not usually observed in thehydrocarbon profile, as in the first experiment. The first octadec-11-enoic acid experiment shows thatunder specific conditions the hydrocarbon profile can be severely altered by feeding octadec-11-enoicacid. @default.
