The arrangement of the sensor includes a cylinder attached to a rotary element in a non-concentric design containing a fixed laser that emits light to the wall of the cylinder which is made of a high-frequency diffraction grating film. The non-concentric rotational movement of the cylinder produces a variation of the distance between the orders of the projected diffraction pattern, allowing measurements of the angular position of the shaft. The mathematical design of the encoder was validated through simulations demonstrating its viability and reliability of the proposed equations. An experimental prototype was built to verify, via interferometric techniques, the resolution in the order of 0.03 [arcsec], therefore showing the potential of a low-cost diffraction optical absolute encoder with an outstanding cost-benefit ratio." @default.
