- W3119454774 abstract "The SPANDSET tool, developed by Triumph Aerospace Structures and the Georgia Institute of Technology is used to analyze multiple preliminary weight metrics of various multi-rib and multi-spar wing box configurations in order to determine the design spaces in which each configuration is optimal. Design choices that were varied throughout testing include aspect ratio, rib transition methods and spacings, the number and location of intermediate spars, upper and lower stringer spacings, and thickness of the planform. The most impactful factors in estimating the weight metrics observed are found to be the aspect ratio and thickness of the planform. It was found that multi-rib configurations are generally more optimal for higher aspect ratio planforms, and multi-spar configurations are more optimal for those with lower aspect ratios. Wings with thicker airfoils are found to be overall generally more weight efficient than those with thinner airfoils. The explored design space is separated into regions in which multi-rib or multi-spar configurations are the more optimal design choice using an estimated relationship between these factors and the weight metrics analyzed. It was found using this relationship that the aspect ratio defining a transition point between the optimal configuration increases as the wing thickness of that design point increases." @default.
