- W3119493442 abstract "Although social media information significantly affects tourists and the tourism industry, the relationships between these factors in times of crisis remain unexplored. This exploratory study measured the impact of social media posts on the supply and demand aspects of peer-to-peer accommodation during the Zika virus epidemic in Miami‒a major tourism hub in the southeastern U.S. Three information models considering the types of and user reactions to social media posts were proposed. The results showed that public posts from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention significantly affected Airbnb bookings and the average daily rate for bookings. Specifically, Airbnb bookings were strongly negatively associated with the frequency of photo posts, while the average daily rate was strongly negatively associated with the frequency of video posts. Furthermore, there were changes in the social media impacts on the supply of and demand for Airbnb rentals over time. The findings of this study can help tourism practitioners and policymakers develop effective information-based tourism crisis management strategies during infectious disease outbreaks." @default.
