- W3120222816 abstract "Reviewed by: Rethinking Black German Studies: Approaches, Interventions, and Histories ed. by Tiffany N. Florvil and Vanessa D. Plumly Andrea Dawn Bryant Tiffany N. Florvil and Vanessa D. Plumly, editors. Rethinking Black German Studies: Approaches, Interventions, and Histories. Peter Lang, 2018. 328 pp. Cloth, $82.95. Rethinking Black German Studies demonstrates the vibrant and ongoing discussions taking place within the field of Black German studies. In their introduction, Tiffany N. Florvil and Vanessa D. Plumly reference Michelle M. Wright’s concept of spacetime, which “comprehends that Black/African diasporic experiences are extremely diverse, and recognizes this complexity rather than elides the differences” (20). The eleven contributions collected here seamlessly align with Wright’s conceptualization of spacetime in their range of voices and perspectives. The chapters consider three disciplinary realms— literature and history, theory and praxis, and art and performance— and provide a glimpse into the nuanced multidimensionality of Black German studies. True to the understanding that diasporic experiences are manifold, the first three contributions of the volume offer insights into how literary and historical scholarship can work to protract rather than constrain. Silke [End Page 105] Hackenesch’s consideration of the colonial underpinnings of cocoa’s influence on the construction of Blackness draws on visual and linguistic sources in addition to contemporary historical scholarship. In chapter 2, Nancy P. Nenno counters the eliding effects that an overemphasis on historical individuals has in an investigation of how contemporary Black Austrians intervene in public spheres. Meghan O’Dea’s close reading of the autobiographical literary texts of Stefanie-Lahya Aukongo and Lucia Engombe, two writers of Namibian descent who grew up in the German Democratic Republic, likewise takes into consideration sociohistorical dimensions in its exploration of the relationship between political rhetoric and childhood experiences. The second section reveals how theory and praxis contribute to the constriction of Blackness and what can be done to counter the ill effects of that elision. To that end, Kimberly Alecia Singletary’s essay exposes how the tendency to overlay Black German experiences with Black American ones unnaturally conflates the two. Kevina King continues the conversation by discussing how the prevalent overpolicing of Black bodies in German public spaces projects the idea that whiteness is normative and natural, while Blackness is misplaced. Both chapters in this section reiterate the importance of recognizing the multivalence inherent to Black diasporic experiences. The contributions in the last section broaden the discussion by examining how various historical and artistic specificities demonstrate additional depth. Kira Thurman’s incisive study contemplates how Austrians and Germans of the nineteenth and twentieth centuries perceived African American spirituals as possible proof that Black people could transcend into producers of culture and knowledge. Although at first blush expansive, the ponderings of these nineteenth-and twentieth-century Austrians and Germans lay bare the prevalent stereotypes that (continually) work(ed) to diminish the recognized capacities of Black individuals. Plumly outlines how Samy Deluxe’s professional identity indicates a rich interplay between audience projection and self-determination that multiplies ways of being and belonging. Jamele Watkins concludes this section by providing ethnographic evidence that many participants in YoungStars, a youth theater group, alluded to several Black women who served as models for dismissing the predominant misconception that Germanness is an exclusively unmarked and unidimensional white construct. [End Page 106] This stunning collection closes with forward-thinking reflections that remain cognizant of both future routes and past roots. In the afterword, Wright reminisces about how she and Tina Campt collaborated to produce the 2003 special issue of Callaloo on (the) Black German experience(s) and about the overdue nature of that project. Looking further back to Farbe bekennen (1986; Showing Our Colors, 1992), Wright references the “intense polyvalent complexity of the Black German experience” (309) that its combination of disciplines, voices, and perspectives conveyed. Taken together, the contributions in Rethinking Black German Studies confirm and deepen the insight that there is no singular Black German experience or identity. If anything, the perceived challenge of the volume emerges from the awareness the reader gains from encounters with the multidimensionality of Black German studies; at the time of its publication, only one contributor was based outside the United States.
