- W3120822354 abstract "Reviewed by: Experiments with Empire: Anthropology and Fiction in the French Atlantic by Justin Izzo Nanar Khamo Izzo, Justin. Experiments with Empire: Anthropology and Fiction in the French Atlantic. Duke UP, 2019. ISBN 978-14780-0400-4. Pp. 296. This monograph explores the ways in which twentieth-century writers and anthropologists in the French Atlantic use ethnography to produce innovative generic forms leading to new epistemologies with regard to history, geography, and politics. The author focuses on both literary writers who incorporate ethnography within their texts and anthropological filmmakers who employ elements of fiction within their documentaries. Despite the growing body of work that focuses on anthropology and literature in the French and Francophone context, the author articulates his analysis through his foregrounding of the relationship between fiction and anthropology to reveal the lateral link between literary and social forms, suggesting the ways in which imperial encounters lead to textual creativity. By focusing on innovative artistic work on empire, the author proposes that his chosen artists imagine possibilities beyond empire, allowing us to understanding empire as an experimental space-time (7), as these new ethnographic fictions seek to understand the new social order imposed by empire. To do so, the text examines the relationship between colonizer and colonized, as well as among different colonies. The crux of the author's argument lays on his use of orthogonal to make his argument, a term he borrows from mathematics that refers to perpendicular line segments, implying intersection and connection but also separation and divergent movement (209). The author begins with looking at late colonial African texts by Michel Leiris and Amadou Hampâté Bâ. One of his goals in his first chapter is to demonstrate how ethnographic fiction offers anthropological epistemologies to its reading communities in differing ways. He argues that Leiris burdens his readership with the difficulties of fieldwork, whereas Bâ stylistically creates vignettes to impart knowledge to his audience. The author traces Leiris's legacy in later chapters, notably on Caribbean fiction, particularly on Édouard Glissant's oeuvre in the fourth chapter. In examining the Créolité movement, the author examines hybrid generic forms of ethnography and fiction to consider how local epistemologies offers possibilities against integration. The author focuses on the Atlantic world, but more work on the Indian Ocean context within this orthogonal framework could help elucidate the concept, particularly in taking into account differences in creolization in the vieilles colonies. In a move that parallels his intent on highlighting the relationship between anthropology and literature, the author examines the uses of fiction in Jean [End Page 224] Rouch's documentary production to allow the creation of new subject-object relations. This monograph concludes with a focus on postcolonial Marseille through Jean-Claude Izzo's crime trilogy that uses ethnographic fiction to give narrative to post-colonial encounters. This study offers a robust examination of imperial literary and anthropological production in the twentieth century. Scholars of empire, literary criticism, and postcolonial studies will gain new insights to understanding imperial epistemologies and the hybrid creativity that flourished in examining empire to envision a more viable democracy of the future.
