• W3122912463 abstract "Productivity improvements are driven by improvements in technology, by improvements in the efficiency with which resources are allocated, and by exploiting economies of size and diversification. Productivity improvements in turn have financial impacts that are distributed among consumers, input suppliers and the business itself. We examine variation in productivity, and its financial impacts, across organizational form and through time. The organizational forms we consider are Spanish commercial banks, savings banks and financial cooperatives, the time period we study is 1993-2004, and our measure of financial performance is operating profit. We decompose multilateral variation in operating profit into variation in quantities and variation in prices. We interpret variation in quantities as reflecting variation in productivity and variation in the operating margin. We interpret variation in prices as reflecting the distribution of the fruits of productivity improvements. We find evidence of variation in financial performance, both across organizational form and through time. We find quantity variation to be more closely associated with variation in the operating margin than with variation in productivity. We find little evidence of variation in income distribution, although recipients of operating profit have fared better at commercial banks than at the other two organizational forms. We also find that deregulation and liberalization have combined to narrow performance gaps among organizational forms, although evidence that increased competition has provided the mechanism through which convergence has occurred is not compelling." @default.
