- W3123777871 abstract "The key is not to worry about being successful, but to instead work toward being significant-and the success will naturally follow.- Oprah WinfreyExcellence DefinedGone are the days when one is expected to compete with others and show that they can do better than others in order to grow within the company. In today's collaborative and cooperative scenario, the only person that people need to compete with is themselves (Sutton, 2014). To be able to show that one can constantly keep learning and growing and surpass one's own achievements is the key to professional growth. In other words, one's ability to excel repeatedly at what one does plays a key role in determining one's career.Aristotle defined excellence way before any corporate or organization started to recognize it and with his most powerful words-We are what we repeatedly do. Excellence, therefore is not an act but a habit-he etched in stone (Figure 2) what excellence really means. One's pursuit of excellence, thus, is a habit that every employee strives to inculcate, day in and day out.Excellence - A Combination of Three PartsIn organizations, one's excellence is a combination of three parts (Figure 3): (1) individual excellence; (2) managerial excellence; and (3) leadership excellence. In the center, binding all these three is one core value, integrity. Now, the instant reaction to this by most employees would be, Wait a minute, am not a manager or a leader in my organization as of now. So, don't need to apply the (b) and (c) parts of excellence, right? Well, no, that is wrong! Manager and leader in this context do not mean the designations in the organization, but rather mean the roles that one plays in the team and their tasks. For every employee, there are always tasks that s/ he is expected to perform well by himself/ herself. Also, there are situations wherein one needs to don the garb of a manager and manage certain aspects of work whilst also at times they need to take on the role of a leader for other activities. In almost every task, all these three roles are required and it is these three roles rather than the designations that combine together to being forth the best in an employee, that is, helps them excel.Individual ExcellenceIndividual excellence is a paradox (Figure 4) of sorts (DeLong and DeLong, 2011). Let us take an example to illustrate this meaning. As far as remember, every behavioral or personality development trainer has told this story about what excellence means.A man walks up to a temple site and sees a sculptor immersed in his work. He was sculpting a 50-ft high statue of Lord Shiva to be installed inside the temple (Figure 5). He seemed engrossed in his work. The man who walked up, however, was astonished to see that there was another statue of Lord Shiva exactly the same as the one the sculptor was making. This surprised him as he wondered why the sculptor was repeating his work for no reason at all. So he asked the sculptor, Excuse me, isn't there already a statue here that you made? Why then, are you creating the same again? To this, the sculptor replied, There is a mistake in the sculpting of the nose in the earlier statue. cannot let that be put up inside the temple. So, have put it aside and started a new one. The man was zapped, Are you out of your mind?! he asked. is a 50 ft statue that has a small inconspicuous problem with its nose. It is not even visible to the naked eye. Why don't you leave it as it is? Who will even know? To this, the sculptor gravely replied, I will know. The above story is one that is told again and again to highlight the meaning of excellence, that it is not for anyone else but only for us; that it is not to do things well when others are looking, but to do them well even when no one is ever going to look; that it is the desire to achieve near perfection in any task and how we do it. We are told to think like the sculptor so that we can also pursue this fantastic frame of mind called excellence. …" @default.
