Demographic characteristics, features of the injury and IOFB, findings of the initial and final ophthalmological examinations, and timing of IOFB removal were studied.The mean age was 38.8 ± 12.0 years, and the median follow-up period was 12.0 (range: 6–98) months. Initial visual acuity (VA) was significantly lower in group 3 (P = 0.005), while final VA was similar between the three subgroups. Frequencies of primary globe repair, initial vitreous hemorrhage (VH), corneoscleral entry, and IOFB removal through the cornea were significantly higher in eyes with large volume IOFBs (P < 0.05). Siderosis was only seen in 4 patients in group 1 (22.2%). No patients developed postoperative endophthalmitis.Large volume posterior segment IOFBs are associated with poor initial VA, initial VH and corneoscleral injury. Nevertheless, PPV and IOFB extraction under favorable conditions may provide significant visual improvement in eyes with large volume IOFBs.Évaluer l’effet du volume du corps étranger sur les résultats visuels et cliniques chez les patients présentant un corps étranger intraoculaire (CEIO) du segment postérieur.Les patients ont été divisés en trois groupes selon le volume du CEIO ; groupe 1 (n = 18 yeux) avec CEIO < 2 mm3, groupe 2 (n = 15 yeux) avec 2 mm3 ≤ CEIO < 6 mm3, groupe 3 (n = 18 yeux) avec CEIO ≥ 6 mm3. Tous les yeux ont subi une vitrectomie par la pars plana (VPP) pour le retrait du CEIO. Les caractéristiques démographiques, les caractéristiques de la blessure et du CEIO, les résultats initiaux et finaux de l’examen ophtalmologique, le moment de l’élimination du CEIO ont été étudiés.L’âge moyen était de 38,8 ± 12,0 ans et la période médiane de suivi était de 12,0 (extrêmes : 6 à 98) mois. L’acuité visuelle (LV) initiale était significativement plus faible dans le groupe 3 (p = 0,005) tandis que la LV finale était similaire entre trois sous-groupes. Les fréquences de réparation primaire du globe, d’hémorragie vitréenne (HV) initiale, d’entrée cornéosclérale et de retrait du CEIO par la cornée étaient significativement plus élevées dans les yeux avec des CEIO de grand volume (p < 0,05). La sidérose n’a été observée que chez 4 patients du groupe 1 (22,2 %). Aucun patient n’a eu d’endophtalmie après l’opération.L’extraction de grands CEIO dans des conditions favorables peut fournir une amélioration visuelle significative des yeux blessés." @default.
